In today’s episode, I’m going over the five things that I see business owners struggle with regularly. These things hold business owners back from moving forward in their businesses and it’s important for everyone to know what they are and if they recognize any of them, to make the shift necessary to move past them.
Doing everything yourself
There are two ways this mindset can present itself. The first is trying to do too much in the sense that you see all the possibilities and try to tackle them all at once which becomes overwhelming. The second is burning up all your time doing the things that you could be outsourcing so you can focus your energy on the bigger picture. Trying to do it all yourself creates stress and makes you feel bad for not getting it all done.
I suggest making a list, work your way down the list and prioritizing. Are there things on that list that don’t need to be there? Are you putting too much pressure on yourself to get too many things done that aren’t actually that important? Maybe you can remove some of those? Now, look at the things that really do need to be there and ask yourself why they aren’t getting done. If any of the reasons are because they aren’t your zone of genius then these are probably things that you shouldn’t be doing. It’s time to start thinking about getting somebody else to help you.
If you’re looking at your to-do list and there are all these things that are adding up and not getting done, either eliminate them or start to think about who could support you with them. Do you want to hire someone for a one-off project or hire an assistant to help out regularly?
Working too hard (and burning out)
This is where the mindset that you're supposed to work really hard to have a successful business can be detrimental because it's not true. The harder you push, the more you force yourself, the more tired you will be, and you will fall out of love with your business.
It’s important to think about what the best use of your time is. What is worth selling? What is it that you love doing? Are you charging enough? People often worry that if they raise their prices, people won’t want to hire them. Think about it though, if you don’t want to do the work anymore because you resent it, that’s not better either.
The idea is that yes, some people will say no and you will have less in the terms of hours and workload, but you aren’t decreasing how much you are making and that’s okay.
Giving everyone everything
Just because somebody wants something and they ask for something doesn’t mean that you have to give them that. You also don’t have to give everyone the full VIP treatment solution if they are buying an introductory level product. There are different levels of things and you need to be okay with not giving everybody everything, the whole final solution, the best-case scenario, no matter what it is they buy.
You need to present it in a way that the small bite gets you a certain outcome and the bigger bite gets you another. You can’t promise the same results as the big bite but crammed into the small bite. The goal is to say to people, “Here's the big bite, here's the small bite, which one do you want?” And then give them exactly that.
Not owning your awesome
This one I see often, business owners who are really well-respected, have a waitlist, or they have so many incredible results to show and they're still charging introductory level pricing. That all stems from our fear of being too ‘braggy’ or ‘cocky’. Instead, I want you to own how awesome you are!
So, here's what I want you to do. Whether you do it in a notebook, on your Facebook Page or pop into my Facebook group, The Biz Studio Community - write out how awesome you are. Without any shame. “I am amazing at_____________.” Start owning how awesome you are, because you are and it's time to stop holding back on that.
Failing to think of yourself as the head of the business
So many business owners became business owners by accident. They wake up one day and say, “I don’t want to do my job anymore so I’m going to do this instead.”
The whole mentality of ‘I'm not a business owner’, or ‘I'm not trying to create anything big, I'm just trying to do my job’ is another way we're holding ourselves back.
Start thinking of yourself as someone who is building a business that isn’t just you. Start thinking of your business as a separate entity. Start to play around with calling yourself a CEO. I’m the CEO of a company. Think about what that means for you, what does that look like and if you start to feel resistance ask yourself why.
These are just five things but there are others. Luckily, there are small mindset shifts you can make while using the right strategies that will help you make more money while loving what you’re doing, as well as help more people and have an impact on the world.
